Frequently asked Questions:

Q. If I use steel fibres, will they be affected by corrosion?

A: According to Technical Report 63 published by the Concrete Society (2007) steel fibres in concrete are protected from corrosion by the background alkalinity of the cement paste. Additionally the steel, being discontinuous in nature is not capable of giving rise to galvanic corrosion. Even if corrosion does occur, the small volume of each fibre (1mm diameter x 60mm long) is insufficient to create bursting stresses associated with larger diameter reinforcement bars. As a result there are no minimum cover requirements. There may be some partially embedded or loose fibres on the surface of the concrete that will initially corrode rapidly in exposed conditions but will be lost under trafficking; this does not lead to disruption of the concrete surface”
